Opinel Picnic Round Ended Safety - Beech, 7.5 cm

Opinel knives are long established and have a great tradition for outstanding value and quality and this model is no exception. My children have watched me whittling and carving and naturally wanted a go themselves, and in spite of my protective parent style safety lecture, I still felt uneasy watching their young hands with my knives and chisels, and decided to find a suitable alternative. This knife is a classic Opinel, identical in design to the standard model, except for the rounded tip. The wonderfully efficient Opinel locking mechanism means the knife cannot snap shut, and the round tip eliminates any chance of accidental stabbing. This knife is very light, beautiful in its simplicity and has the added bonus of the safety elements. The rounded tip can be easily ground to a point if necessary, but for younger kids adds peace of mind to the concerned parent, while still allowing the child the thrill of being allowed to use it. As a footnote, this knife is not legal-carry under UK law because of the blade length and the locking mechanism.

Purchased for preparing toddler food when out and about. I have used Opinel knives in the past so knew the design an operation. My partner is very happy with it, as we can now cut up apples, tomatoes, etc. fresh, rather than prepare them at home and have them oxidise over the morning. The rounded end give us a bit more confidence in case it's dropped, etc, but the blade is still very sharp and should be kept away from little hands. The blade is stainless (type not specified) but has coped well with fruit, etc. and being wiped clean on baby wipes then left in a lunch bag all day. To remove the blade you do need some nail and a bit of strength - there is a degree of friction to opening the knife by design - a thumb works best for me. But those looking to preserve manicured nails, or who bite them down may struggle. It would also be good for teaching children how to use a knife and letting them build confidence working with it. All in all it's a nicely designed knife that offers a greater degree of safety than normal.

This knife is very sharp straight out of the packaging. I bought it as a first “explorer” bushcraft knife for my 5 year old. He loves it, perfect size for him and once taught safe ways to use it’s really safe with the lock and blunted end (no stabby bit). He found it easy to use due to the size, shape and sharpness. It looks like an adventure knife too with its wooden handle. Great knife… I’m going to get an actual No.7 for me now 😊

This is a great knife for preparing food and eating your food. Its very sharp, easy to store away and doesn't weigh to much.

Very nice knive cuts rope well and is also good for cuting veg and spreding butter.

A lovely knife for my 9 year old to start whittling with. The tip is like a butter knife so safer. Knife was reasonably sharp just needing honing on a strop with polishing compound. We use the blue smurf look (he likes the name). The only issue is the lock as we may fall foul of the UK knife laws and may need to remove it. Our local pcso is looking into it for us to clarify.

FIVE stars for having the innovation to market a safer knife for youngsters. I bought this for my 8 year old grandson so he can learn under supervision how to do basic whittling and culinary tasks, with his father. The lock is the same found on other Opinel knives. This knife, by the way, would also work perfectly as a traveler's steak knife, it comes SHARP, right out of the package. The locking mechanism will lock the knife closed as well as open, a fine safety feature not found on many knives. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Have owned a number Opinel knives over the years (pointed end variety) & have been happy with quality (for the price). This rounded end makes this way more versatile - easier to butter bread, scoop jam out of the jar and spread etc etc. A great all round knife for travel.

No estoy mu contento con opinel,el precio era bueno pero el filo me vino con rebaba que con darle unass pasadas con una chaira se quito facilmente,el filo se quedo como nuevo y e de decir que ahora corta mucho,no se puede pedir mucho por 10€

Der Klassiker für Kinderhände. Bei dem Messer handelt es sich quasi um ein Opinel no. 7 (gibt es auch für Erwachsene), nur, dass die Spitze abgerundet ist. Dies kann Verletzungen, zum Beispiel durch Abrutschen, im Bestfall vermeiden. Man darf sich aber nichts vormachen, die Klinge ist trotzdem sehr scharf. Ansonsten alles wie von Opinel erwartet: Ikonische Optik, liegt gut in der Hand, feststellbare Klinge, sau scharf, … Somit perfekt zum Schnitzen mit den Kleinen geeignet.
