The filter lets a lot of air to flow through it. However, if you live in a dusty environment, the dust will accumulate in the filter and reduce the airflow a bit. It's a good idea to wash or replace the filter when you notice a lot of dust in it.

No, contact with fuel is not recommended. Polyurethane foam filter material is recommended for airflow applications.
