Needed for most DirecTV receivers when using a tripod antenna
Quick summary: You need this switch kit if you have an HD receiver to convert the non-HD signal from the antenna. I was unable to get DirecTV to send me a non-SMW receiver ... I could have bought one elsewhere (like the Winegard site) but DirecTV sent me the H25 for free, although its not free because you have to pay $7 per month for a receiver regardless of where you buy it or get it from DirecTV.We use this switch kit as part of our football tailgate setup. Let me just say upfront the main negative is that the instructions that come with this are, well, not exactly straightforward or missing altogether. The one thing I'll say is there are so many possible configurations that its understandable this can be confusing. Here is what I have going ...Receiver: DirecTV H25 receiverDish/antenna: Winegard TR-6018 round 18" dishSwitch kit: Winegard SMW-840TV: Phillips 42" LED flatscreenThe Winegard site is a bit clunky to find manuals, but they are on there and follow their schematics for the switch kit. I've attached a picture which may help a bit too. Note that with the TR-6018, you want to have the coax cables plugged into your antenna and then plugged into the two endings with the "Sat 99/101" label above them. You are actually using Satellite 101 for DirecTV.You will need to buy all of the coax wires and an HDMI cable to make the needed connections ... they are not included with the kit. I bought short ones on Amazon to avoid having cables everywhere. You will notice I mounted mine to a 1/2" thick piece of plywood ... this allows me to avoid having to disconnect any more than possible and transportation is much easier. One last thing to note ... I first tried to use my DirecTV HR44 DVR Genie receiver. I could not ever get it to work, even though I did manage to find the satellite signal. When I got the H25, during the satellite setup it had many more options for the types of antennas to use. The H25 has an option for "Round 18" which was not available on the HR44. This was the only difference in the configuration so while it may be possible to use an HR44, I could not figure it out.

Check with manufacturer before ordering what others “think” you need.
Product was used to assist in changing from SWM satellite to a dome one when we “upgraded” to a new motorohome. Product worked as described but it didn’t help our dome dish work any better - not a fault of the vendor though. Just bad luck changing to dome type - old technology. Will no doubt now have to buy a new SWM dish like we had previously on our older motorhome.

Met Our Needs
The switch kit did meet my needs but I am returning it because I was able to get a second receiver from DirectTv that is a standard receiver instead of a HD genie. I have the HD genie at home that I took with me to our motor home but without the switch kit, I could not hook up my carryout G2 Winegard satellite because the two were not compatible with each other. With the standard receiver, the switch kit is not needed.

This is a good product at a much lower price than what the kit sells for elsewhere. Here are a few things I learned after setting this up this week, and finally getting it to work.. I am using a Winegard Carryout G2 Satellite and Directv HR44 receiver for may tailgating setup.#1 - Make sure you set your receiver to either "show all channels" or "hide HD channels" if you are using Directv or non-hd satellite! It blatantly says this on the directions, but once you're in the midst of setting this up, this step may elude you (as well)...! Go to Menu, Settings, Display, and then change to hide HD channels if you are using Directv.#2 - This 3-piece set includes a splitter. If you only plan to use ONE RECEIVER, then you don't need the splitter. It will just make the setup more complicated. You could consider just buying the swm8 switch and power inserter separately if you wanted.#3 - It is recommended that you terminate all unused connections. Terminators are not included. These are available on Amazon (F Type 75 Ohm Terminator - 10 Pack)#4 - This set only includes ONE (very short) coaxial cable to bridge the gap between the SWM8 and power inserter. You will need many more coaxials. The number will depend on your setup. Count the number of cables on the setup diagram for your satellite and order appropriatelyHope these help someone

The unit gets very hot. Did not work and company sent me a new one. Works now but still gets hot. Instructions were simple except when configuring the Genie receiver - item in menu that required changing was greayed out and had to call DirecTV to set up the dish properly

H25 receivers work when you add this kit.
This kit works great if you have a swm system. I have H25 receivers and get every channel (including local channels)on the two tv's that I have in my Rv. No instructions come with the kit, but the Winegard web site has excellent instructions on how to setup the hardware. The satellite settings have to be modified on each receiver and you are watching tv. The whole setup took me less than 30 minutes.

FRAUD ALERT: THIS IS NOT A WINEGARD KIT
The Winegard SWM-840 switch kit is a set of products made by DirecTV. Winegard packages them along with instructions on how to adapt various satellite dishes for SWM 3 use. This offering claims to be the Winegard kit. IT ISN'T!I got a package, not in an Amazon box. It was a FedEx box with the components in it. The label was from a third party seller. Inside were the DirecTV components along with a poor-quality, computer-printed bunch of loose sheets with wiring diagrams. All products shipped from Winegard contain printed instructions plus information on product registration, customer support, etc. None of this was present.I'm not against third parties offering equivalent products, but they should be labeled as such. This kit is listed on Amazon as the Winegard kit. I want to know when I am getting off-brand stuff. I strongly suggest you get the real kit from Winegard. Don't be fooled like me. Stay away!
